Reichardt: But she has material needs. Like her hot water is broken. You can have material needs on different economic planes, where things are just broken. But did you find yourself approaching the Texas longhorns 12 big conference men’s basketball champions 2023 shirt in other words I will buy this character Lizzy differently because her life is so interiorized rather than motivated by circumstance or economic anxiety? Williams: I don’t know if I approached her any differently than any of the other women—or any other character. It’s kind of like a mystery. You’re solving a mystery. And you really hope that you have most of it figured out by day one. Because once you start filming, you’re committing things to the screen and you can’t go back and change your mind about them. They’ll always be a formation of this character. You want to have some understanding. Until then, you feel like you’re just trying to solve something. You’re scratching your head, and you’re just kind of perturbed. You’re just trying to find out who this person is. Then ultimately, the thing that is really fun is to make yourself available to things that still surprise you. The accidents that happen on set. I think you’re always hoping that something will get in your way. You want an obstacle, an impediment, a surprise, an accident, something that is going to throw you off and present new information about the person that you’ve become.
Photo: Courtesy of A24Kelly, I imagine you’ve already been asked this a lot, but one of the Texas longhorns 12 big conference men’s basketball champions 2023 shirt in other words I will buy this most unusual or jarring things about Showing Up is that it is the first film since Wendy and Lucy that is actually set in a city rather than a rural or wilderness landscape. [Both were shot in Portland.] You’ve said often that making a film begins with a location, a sense of place that informs the story. What possessed you to go back to the city after so many projects in the wilds and sticks? Reichardt: Much of Showing Up takes place in apartment buildings two blocks from where I live. So after I got spoiled thinking of the shots in that arrangement, it was really hard to consider other spaces, even though these spaces were so tiny. So that street was kind of key. But the script was really written around the school—the Oregon College of Art and Craft. It’s such an important school, and it’s gone now. It was bought and is going to be turned into a middle school. It has a long history in the ceramics-art world in the Pacific Northwest. It was just empty when we went there. And I kept going back because we were writing the script for this place. Every time I’d go back there, somebody would be carrying a door away or some other fantastic thing and I’d think, Oh, shit. Stop tearing this place apart. But because of COVID, we were actually able to shoot in this really special place.
